So many people are overweight and obese in highly developed countries. Many factors contribute to such conditions. There is primarily genetics- one is predisposed to it. But it can be aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits, and many people are guilty of these tendencies. Such is why obesity statistics is on the rise, and it has become alarming.

If the current levels of obesity and overweight in children continues, their life expectancy will more than likely be reduced. By how much is unknown and of course this will depend on the food choices they make as they proceed through their adult years. Studies have shown that only 1% of teenagers are eating the recommended three to four serves of whole fruit each day and only one in five younger children, and one in twenty older children are eating enough vegetables.

As fast food is an accepted part of modern life these days, it is difficult to teach a child about healthy eating. The cheapest and easiest foods are those that are normally the least healthy and generally there is no doubt which food the child will choose if the decision is between healthy food and junk food.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in most western countries, to the point where it is placing unsustainable pressure on the economy, our health systems and our health facilities. More than two-thirds of the population of the United States is either overweight or obese. The question is “what can be done to improve the health of our nation to reverse or control this situation”.

As obesity continues to rise alarmingly, it places extreme pressure on our health systems and medical facilities. In the United States alone nearly two-thirds of adults are now classed as being overweight and half of these (more than 72 million people) are considered obese. Obesity, once a disease of old age and high living is now affecting younger and younger slices of the population. For the first time in history we could see a whole generation of children develop diseases at an earlier rate when they become adults.
